POPE JOHN PAUL II FUND FOR POLISH ORPHANS AND ABANDONED CHILDREN
In 1979, the International Year of the Child, a group of like-minded people led by the late Rev. Edward Swiatek, OMI, and the late Mr. Jan Stocker created the Pope John Paul II Fund for Polish Orphans and Abandoned Children to honour the Holy Father’s love for youth and disadvantaged children. On December 24, 1980, the organization was granted its Letters Patent by the government of Canada.
This date has joyful meaning particularly since Christmas is the feast day of a Child - of a newborn Baby. The Pope John Paul II Fund for Polish Orphans and Abandoned Children is a charitable organization functioning thanks to the help of organizations, businesses and individual donors. As an all-volunteer Registered Charity, your contributions go to help the neediest children. As a registered charity, we issue official income tax receipts. Our all-volunteer organization has raised in excess of half a million dollars. The need continues to remain great and by necessity, our work must continue. Today, we carry forward this work to honour the memory of this great man.
The objectives of this charitable organization are to aid and assist orphans and abandoned children in all polish communities in Canada and abroad both financially and spiritually; to aid in maintaining and establishing the importance of the family unit in our society; to promote, establish, equip and operate care centres and establishments that develop and maintain a spiritual and family atmosphere; and to assist other organizations and institutions having similar objectives.
To date, The Pope John Paul II Fund for Polish Orphans and Abandoned Children has distributed more than $500,000.00 to benefit disadvantaged children. Grants have been awarded for medical treatment, medical equipment and the promotion of new surgical methods for children. As well, care centres have been repaired, retrofitted for heating systems and have had fire safety equipment installed. Basic needs have also been looked after with the funding of food, clothing and day to day equipment and supplies
